At Plumbing Doctor, a regular service call is $49, and it's waived if you go ahead with the work. Nights, weekends and holidays add a $250 after-hours fee, paid upfront. The repair itself gets a flat price once we see the problem, and no work starts until you agree to it. What you pay in total depends on what's broken and how hard it is to reach.
What makes up the bill?
An emergency plumbing bill usually has two parts:
- The visit. Our $49 service call covers coming out, and it's waived if you go ahead with the work. If the problem can't be seen right away, tracking it down is a separate diagnostic fee. Outside regular hours, the $250 after-hours fee applies on top.
- The repair. A flat price for the job, based on the parts and the work involved. You hear it before we start.
What changes the repair price?
- What failed. Replacing a split supply line is a smaller job than replacing a burst section of pipe inside a finished ceiling.
- Access. Pipes behind finished walls, under slabs or in tight crawl spaces take longer to reach.
- Parts. A failed water heater needs a new heater; a stuck shut-off valve needs a valve.
- Damage already done. If water has been running for hours, there may be more to repair than the original leak.
Is it worth paying the after-hours fee?
Sometimes, and sometimes not. If water is spreading and you can't stop it, sewage is coming up a drain, or you have no water at all, waiting until morning usually costs more in damage than the fee. If the problem is a dripping faucet, a slow drain or a running toilet, it can wait for a regular visit and you skip the fee. Call and ask; we'll tell you honestly whether it needs someone tonight.
How to keep the cost down
- Know where your main shut-off valve is. Closing it fast is the single biggest way to limit water damage.
- Shut the water off before you call. Every minute the water runs adds to the cleanup.
- Fix small leaks before they become big ones. A slow drip under a sink is cheaper to fix on a Tuesday afternoon than at 2 a.m. after the fitting lets go.
How Plumbing Doctor quotes
Mike Holt, a licensed NJ Master Plumber, diagnoses the problem first and gives you a flat price before any work starts. The price doesn't change once the work begins, and every repair comes with 1 year on parts and labor. For larger repairs, you can pay over time with financing.
