Frozen and burst pipes

Central Jersey winters freeze pipes in unheated spaces: crawl spaces, garages, exterior walls and outdoor faucets. Water expands as it freezes and splits the pipe, and the leak often shows up only when it thaws. If a faucet gives no water on a cold morning, the line may be frozen. Shut off the main valve before it thaws and call. Mike's guides on winterizing pipes and frozen outdoor faucets cover prevention.

Low water pressure

Low pressure at one faucet is usually a clogged aerator or worn cartridge. Low pressure everywhere points to the pressure regulator, the main valve or corroded pipe. Hard water speeds that corrosion up; see how hard water hurts plumbing.

Old pipes

Galvanized steel pipe rusts from the inside and narrows over decades. Copper can develop pinhole leaks. If you're fixing leaks every few months, ask about repiping. Mike explains how long common pipe materials last.

Copper

Best for: The long-lasting standard

Soldered copper for supply lines. Durable and code-approved everywhere.

B

PEX

Best for: Flexible, fewer joints

Plastic tubing that bends around corners, so repairs need smaller wall openings.

C

Old galvanized

Best for: Rust, low pressure

Gray steel pipe from older homes. It rusts from the inside; we replace it when it fails.

Water on the floor right now?

Call. A licensed plumber answers day or night, talks you through stopping the water, and gets on the road.

908-873-6686

Nights, weekends and holidays: emergency visits are an extra $250, paid upfront. We tell you on the phone before we drive out.

Do this now

  1. Shut the main valve. Usually where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. Kill power to anything wet, from the breaker panel, if you can reach it dry.
  3. Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.

Pipes & Plumbing Repair: common questions

What should I do if a pipe bursts?

Shut off the main water valve right away, usually where the water line enters the house next to the meter. Turn off power to anything wet, then call us.

How do I keep pipes from freezing?

Keep heat on in the house, open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls during cold snaps, disconnect garden hoses and shut off outdoor faucets from inside. Mike's winterizing guide covers the rest.

Why is my water pressure low?

If it's one fixture, usually a clogged aerator or cartridge. If it's the whole house, it may be a failing pressure regulator, a partly closed main valve, or old corroded pipe.

What kind of pipe do you use?

Copper or PEX, depending on the job and what's already in the house. We'll explain the choice on site.
