Repair or replace?

A water heater that stops working doesn't always need replacing. Many problems come down to one part: a thermostat, a heating element, a gas valve or an igniter. Mike tests the heater first and tells you what's wrong.

Replacement makes sense when the tank itself leaks, or when the heater is more than about 10 years old and keeps breaking down. At that point another repair rarely pays off. Either way, you get a flat price before we start, and we won't push a new heater you don't need.

Water heaters we work on

  • Gas tank heaters, the type we see most
  • Electric tank heaters
  • Tankless (on-demand) heaters, gas and electric
  • Heat pump water heaters
  • Instant hot water dispensers at the sink

Keep it running longer

Central Jersey water carries minerals that settle at the bottom of the tank. That sediment makes the heater work harder and wears it out sooner. Flushing the tank once a year and checking the anode rod every few years add years to a heater's life. Read Mike's guide to water heater maintenance for what a tune-up covers.

A

Gas tank

Best for: Homes with gas service

The common choice. Heats fast and usually swaps in right where the old one was.

B

Electric tank

Best for: Homes without gas

Simple to install and no venting. Slower to recover after heavy use.

C

Tankless

Best for: Endless hot water, small spaces

Heats water as you use it, so it never runs out. Takes up a fraction of the space.

D

Heat pump

Best for: Lowest electric bills

Moves heat from the air into the water and uses far less electricity than a standard electric tank.

Water on the floor right now?

Call. A licensed plumber answers day or night, talks you through stopping the water, and gets on the road.

908-873-6686

Nights, weekends and holidays: emergency visits are an extra $250, paid upfront. We tell you on the phone before we drive out.

Do this now

  1. Shut the main valve. Usually where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. Kill power to anything wet, from the breaker panel, if you can reach it dry.
  3. Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.

Water Heater Repair & Installs: common questions

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

If the tank itself is leaking, it has to be replaced; tanks can't be patched. If a part has failed (thermostat, element, gas valve, igniter), repair usually makes sense. Once a heater is past about 10 years old and breaking down often, replacement tends to cost less over time.

How long does a water heater last?

A standard tank heater usually lasts 8 to 12 years. Hard water shortens that because sediment builds up in the tank. Flushing the tank once a year helps it last longer.

Do you install tankless and heat pump water heaters?

Yes. We install and service tankless (on-demand) and heat pump water heaters as well as standard gas and electric tanks.

How fast can you replace a water heater?

Call and we'll give you a time on the phone. Book by 9 a.m. for same-day service.

Why is my water heater making popping noises?

Usually sediment. Minerals settle at the bottom of the tank and trapped water boils under them. Flushing the tank often helps; if the noise stays, the heater may be near the end of its life.
