How Much Does Water Heater Replacement Cost?

Gas water heater in an unfinished basement

The cost of replacing a water heater depends mainly on the kind of heater you choose and what the installation needs. Swapping a gas tank for the same size gas tank is the simplest job. Switching to tankless or a heat pump heater, or bringing venting and connections up to code, adds to it. At Plumbing Doctor you get a flat price for the whole job before work starts.

Repair or replace first?

Not every broken water heater needs replacing. A bad thermostat, element, igniter or gas valve can often be repaired for much less. Replacement makes sense when the tank itself leaks, or when the heater is more than about 10 years old and keeps breaking down. Mike checks first and tells you which it is.

What changes the price?

  • Type. A standard tank heater costs the least. Tankless heaters cost more to buy and install but take up less space and don't run out of hot water. Heat pump water heaters cost more upfront and use much less electricity.
  • Fuel. Gas and electric heaters differ in price, and switching fuels means new gas piping or electrical work.
  • Size. A bigger tank or a higher-capacity tankless unit costs more. The right size depends on how many people use hot water at once.
  • Venting. Gas heaters need proper venting. Some replacements need new vent pipe; high-efficiency and tankless units may need a different type.
  • Code items. New installations may need an expansion tank, a new relief valve line or updated gas connections to pass inspection.
  • Permit. Water heater replacements in New Jersey generally need a plumbing permit and inspection through the town.
  • Access. A heater in a tight closet or crawl space takes longer to swap than one in an open basement.

How long does a water heater last?

A tank heater usually lasts 8 to 12 years. Hard water shortens that, because sediment builds up in the tank. Flushing it once a year helps. See Mike's guide to water heater maintenance and his overview of water heater types.

Ways to pay

A new water heater is a bigger purchase, so we offer financing through Wisetack. Checking your options takes a few minutes on your phone and doesn't affect your credit score.

How Plumbing Doctor quotes

You get a flat price that covers the heater, installation, code items and hauling the old one away. It doesn't change once work starts, and the installation comes with 1 year on parts and labor on top of the manufacturer's warranty. See water heater repair and replacement or call 908-873-6686.

Do this now

  1. Shut the main valve. Usually where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. Kill power to anything wet, from the breaker panel, if you can reach it dry.
  3. Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.
